Battle Against Contamination
Plastic bags are one of the top contaminants in residential and commercial recycling streams. Yet, customers tell us they didn’t know plastic bags were not recyclable, or that they shouldn’t bag recyclables before tossing them into their container. People want to do the right thing – our research backs that up. For folks who have been recycling and bagging their recyclables for decades, it’s incumbent upon us to do two things to help them change their behavior:
- Educate, educate, educate – explain why you can’t recycle using plastic bags, and
- Provide solutionsthat work and are scalable.
The attached Recycling News Bulletin is relevant for customers who need to go
bag-free when recycling at work or at home. It provides a straightforward solution for how to engage employees (or family members!) to consolidate recycling containers within the home or workplace and then empty all materials directly into the final collection bin. You can also check out, download, and share a variety of tools on the No Plastic Bags Resourcespage on Recycle Often. Recycle Right.com.
Please share the attached Community Recycling Bulletin with your residents and remind them of one thing: If we all recycle right, and recycle only clean and dry bottles, cans, paper and cardboard, there’s never a need for a plastic bag.
